GM CEO to auction personal 1958 Corvette for charity - Latest Cars News

Akerson confirmed on Tuesday that he will be sending his personal 1958 Corvette to the Barrett-Jackson auto auction in Scottsdale, Arizona, on January 18. Akerson will donate all proceeds from the sale to Habitat for Humanity Detroit to help revitalize the Morningside Commons neighborhood.

"The 1958 Corvette is pure American ingenuity and creativity and the free spirit that Chevrolet represents to me. I love the car : but I think it's probably better purposed somewhere else," Akerson said. "The need for Habitat for Humanity is so great that I thought, �Wow, maybe I could really make a difference in a whole different way.'"

Akerson has been heavily involved with the local Habitat for Humanity. Earlier this year Akerson and his wife Karin personally donated $1 million to help launch "Leaders to Rebuild Detroit," Habitat's three-year, $25 million initiative to serve at least 500 families in Morningside Commons through house construction, rehabilitation and energy efficient upgrades.

Akerson's 1958 Corvette is just one of 9,168 built that model year, and just one of 510 to roll out of the factory in Regal Turquoise. Akerson's car even comes complete with a factory hard top.
