2009 Acura TL Sales rising in October

2009 Acura TL
In an impressive feat, the 2009 Acura TL sold more units in October of this year than the 2008 TL sold in October 2007, despite the dismal sales last month.

The new TL has the latest version of the Acura “beak.” Not many journalists like the new nose, but at least it gets people to look at the car and the attention seems to have worked. The 2009 TL sold 4,340 units in October, its first month of sales, which is 22.2 percent more than last October.

Acura’s total sales for October however, followed the rest of the industry in dropping. The total sales were down 24.5 percent

Acura May Revive NSX

Acura May Revive NSXDespite having killed the NSX project late last year due to tanking industry sales, Honda says it could still revive the NSX in the future.

Dick Colliver, executive vice president of American Honda, said in an interview that the NSX could still be revived because "the development is mostly done." Honda is working to reassure dealers who were concerned when it cancelled plans to make the next-generation sports car.

Acura is sticking to its plan of becoming a Tier 1 luxury automaker without sacrificing its value image. "Being a premium luxury brand is not just about product. It's the way dealers handle customers. You've got to earn your way into the segment. You don't necessarily need a $90,000 sedan to get there."

Along with the NSX, Honda cancelled development of its rear-wheel drive V-8 platform for Acura. The Japanese automaker's luxury brand has also taken flack for the styling direction it introduced last year with the introductions of the new TSX, TL and RL. Acura's sales dropped 15 percent last year compared with 2007.

Acura Confirms V-8 Development

It has been confirmed that Acura will be offering a V-8 engine option within 18 months. Acura dealer Mark McKellop remarked that having a flagship sedan with an eight cylinder engine is a necessity to elevate the brand.

Dealers say that having a vehicle that is offered with a V-8 is a must-have in order for Acura to compete against luxury brands like Mercedes-Benz and BMW. Those within Honda have long talked about making Acura a top-tier luxury brand, and at a dealers' meeting last April, Acura "put a stake in the ground" and made the shift official, says Jeff Conrad, vice-president of the Acura division at American Honda Motor Co.

A new large luxury sedan in the works at Acura set for release by 2011 or 2012 may be fitted with the V-8, but the 18 month commitment by the automaker suggests that we could see an Acura V-8 even sooner.

Some dealers have speculated that the next RL, which is due out in 2010, could be the recipient of the first V-8 engine. The current RL is sold with a 300 hp, 3.7 liter V-6 engine - the most powerful engine ever offered in an Acura.
