Video: Honda Uni-Cub to Take on the Segway

Honda may be best known for creating affordable, reliable four-wheel transportation, but that hasn’t stopped the company from dabbling in just about everything. From robots to lawnmowers to aircraft, Honda builds it all.

The Japanese company’s latest experiment is the Uni-Cub, a personal mobility device that promises to do what the Segway can’t. Based on Honda’s U3-X concept which debuted back in 2009, the Uni-Cub the world’s first omni-directional driving wheel system. That means that the rider can control speed, move in any direction, turn and stop, all simply by shifting his or her body-weight.

Unlike the Segway, riders of the Uni-Cub will maintain eye-level height with other pedestrians. Thanks to that, its compact size, and its maneuverability, the device allows riders to easy roam inside buildings and among other people.

According to Honda, riders will also have the option of navigating the device using a touchscreen-based app. Unfortunately, the Uni-Cub isn’t quite ready for prime-time yet. A fleet of Uni-Cubs will be heading to Japan’s National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation this June for testing, but commercial sale of the device has yet to be announced.

BMW Embraces Italian Design for New Concept

This year’s glamorous Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este is sponsored by BMW. So, naturally, the German automaker wanted to show-off an equally stunning and glamorous vehicle at the event, which is held on the shores of Lake Como in northern Italy.

To build such a vehicle, BMW teamed up with renowned Italian coachbuilder Zagato to turn the underpinnings of a Z4 roadster into a show-stopping concept. Despite its overwhelming beauty, this one-off concept vehicle is actually fully road registered in Germany, and has already undergone high-speed testing at BMW’s own test facility.

“The BMW Zagato Coupe embodies the unbridled fascination of cars and fuses the design DNA of the two companies into a fresh and distinctive whole,” BMW said in a statement. “This one-off model is the product of many hours of skilled hand-craftsmanship and breathes new life into the tradition of coachbuilding.”

Although BMW reached beyond its own design team to create this concept, it isn’t the first time such a partnership has been forged. Nearly sixty years ago BMW sought out Italian metalwork for its entry in the Mille Miglia. Today, the BMW Zagato Coupe embodies the renewed connection between BMW and the hands of Italian designers.

“Working with Zagato was a fantastic experience. It was extremely enriching for us to create something with people who share our understanding of good design and passion for cars,” explains Karim Habib, Head of Design BMW Automobiles. “And that is what makes the car so special – the open and constructive dialogue with Zagato, their experience, craftsmanship and incomparable sense for forms. All of these gifts are wrapped up in the BMW Zagato Coupe.”

The look of the BMW Zagato Coupé focuses purposefully on the road ahead, and accentuates the car’s driver-oriented character and high-speed potential. Its stance is low and wide to aid its sporty appearance, while the long hood hints at a potent powerplant within. The roof features a double bubble, which enhances aerodynamics and provides greater headroom for drivers wearing a helmet. This is also a design element that finds its way into nearly every Zagato-designed vehicle.

While the Zagato influence is evident, the BMW Zagato Coupe retains the classical BMW Roadster lines. Take a closer look at this stunning vehicle via the gallery below.

Nissan e-NV200 Electric Van Enters Production

What do you get when you cross the Nissan Leaf with a minivan? Well, you get something like the e-NV200, an all-new electric van that Nissan will be putting into production.

While many automakers like Honda and Toyota are finding ways to optimize hybrid powertrains for larger vehicles, Nissan is taking the same technology that’s found within its Leaf EV to power its heftier models. The e-NV200 is closely based on the NV200 van, which is current on sale in many regions outside of the U.S. The van is also known as the “Taxi of Tomorrow” and will soon replace aging taxicabs in New York City.

“e-NV200 represents a genuine breakthrough in commercial vehicles and further underlines Nissan’s leadership within the electric vehicle segment,” said Andy Palmer, Nissan Executive Vice President. “The new model will offer all the spaciousness, versatility and practicality of a traditionally powered compact van, but with zero CO2 emission at the point of use and also provide an outstanding driving experience that is unique to EV’s.”

Production of the e-NV200 is set to start next year at the same plant in Barcelona, Spain that builds the the conventionally-powered NV200. It’s unclear whether we’ll see the electrified van on this side of the pond, but Nissan believes the new model will be an asset to families and businesses alike due to its versatility as well as its advanced powertrain. Nissan also promises that it will deliver a driving range similar to the Nissan Leaf on a single charge and that it will boast similar performance, together with best in class running and maintenance costs.

Andy Palmer added: “e-NV200 represents a bold and innovative addition to our commercial vehicle range, which is already one of the broadest of any manufacturer.

Alfa Romeo, Mazda to Jointly Build New Roadsters

Japanese engineering and Italian design will come together in a new roadster being jointly developed by Mazda and Alfa Romeo. The two automakers will build a vehicle for both brands based on the next-generation MX-5 Miata.

This partnership should be good news for Alfa fans who have been waiting patiently for the Italian automaker to return to the U.S. with a successor to the to the classic Duetto and Spider. These models defined the Italian maker in the 1960s and 1970s, especially after the release of the 1967 movie “The Graduate.”

“This agreement clearly demonstrates our commitment to Alfa Romeo and the determination to grow it into a truly global brand,” said Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne. “By partnering with Mazda, we will be co-operating with the recognized leader in compact rear-drive vehicle architectures in order to deliver an exciting and stylish roadster in the Alfa Romeo tradition.”

For Mazda, the partnership is bound to strengthen the MX-5’s appeal to sports-car purists. While the Miata was inspired by vintage British and Italian roadsters, it proved to be far more reliable and have more styling power than competitors from America and Japan. If Mazda can create a vehicle that continues to be lightweight, nimble, and fun-to-drive, while infused with classic Italian design, it could have a winner on its hands.

“Establishing technology and product development alliances is one of Mazda’s corporate objectives and this announcement with Fiat is an important first step in that direction,” said Takashi Yamanouchi, Mazda’s Representative Director and Chairman of the Board, President and CEO. “It is especially exciting to be collaborating with such a prestigious marque as Alfa Romeo on a new roadster based on the next-generation MX-5, which is such an iconic vehicle for Mazda and recognized as the best-selling roadster of all time.”

Although the two roadsters will feature unique styling and propriety engines, both are slated to be produced in Hiroshima, Japan, at the same plant that has turned out MX-5s for decades.

BMW Named World's Most Valuable Car Brand

Toyota has officially lost its title of the world’s most valuable car brand. According to the BrandZ Top 100 Most Valuable Global Brands study, published by market research company Millward Brown, that coveted distinction now belongs to BMW once again. Other German brands including Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen and Audi also dramatically improved their standing in the latest rankings.

BMW has been able to effectively communicate what sets it apart from other automakers, while backing up its message with a high-quality product. For those reasons, BMW took the top place in the rankings. Although Toyota is still among the world’s best brands, the tsunami and nuclear disasters that affected all Japanese automakers last year negatively affected the automaker’s brand-value ranking.

“Toyota is certainly seen as a good value, very reliable and very trustworthy, which are all tremendous qualities, especially for mid-range buyers,” said Peter Walshe, Millward Brown global brand director. “The problem with Toyota has to do with its financials, not brand, due to the disasters, which were clearly out of its control.”

German brands saw tremendous success in the latest rankings partly due to their success in Asia. Additionally, Korean automaker Hyundai has steadily risen to the top ten for the first time due to the improving quality and style of its products.

Aside from automotive brands, the 2012 Top 100 most valuable brands list is topped by Apple, IBM, and Google.

Can the 2013 Nissan Altima Dethrone the Camry?

2

For years, Nissan has trailed Toyota and Honda in sales and failed to achieve the same level of regard in overall consumer awareness. But more recently, Nissan has retooled its marketing, honed its engineering strengths, and pushed design boundaries to reestablished itself in the U.S.

The automaker is now preparing its most effective weapon yet to dethrone Toyota and its top-selling Camry. That weapon is the fifth-generation Altima, which just went into production in Tennessee.

Although the Altima has been a formidable contender in the midsize sedan segment, it hasn’t achieved the same level of success as the Camry or the Honda Accord. “[The] Altima has relied heavily on sales to fleets, rather than retail,” says Michelle Krebs, an analyst for Edmunds.com. “It’s been hard for companies like Nissan and Mazda to break through.”

Nissan is confident that the 2013 Altima will be a game-changer, and expects the car to outsell Toyota’s beloved Camry within a year. While at first glance that may sound like a ridiculous goal, it’s important to remember that even against incredible odds, Nissan is a truly incredible company. In 1999, the company was on the verge of bankruptcy, but has since retooled its manufacturing system and reorganized the company. Bill Krueger, vice chairman of Nissan operations in the Americas, promises that such improvements weren’t made just so that the company can settle for being No. 2.

Moreover, the Altima itself has gained momentum since it debuted back in 1992. In the first four months of 2012, Nissan sold 112,599 Altimas–almost 30-percent more than the same period last year. By comparison, Honda sold 96,517 Accords, Toyota sold 142,225 Camrys, Chevrolet sold 80,456 Malibus and Ford sold 85,559 Fusions during the same period.

“The Nissan Altima ranks among the country’s top-selling cars and best-known nameplates,” said Krueger. “This generation is not only the most innovative Altima ever, it also becomes the benchmark for quality in the midsize car segment. And there’s no better plant to rise to the challenge than our top-quality manufacturing operations in Smyrna.”

The all-new 2013 Nissan Altima will continue to offer many of the same qualities that made the outgoing model such a hit. With a base price of just $21,500, the 2013 model, however, will offer a slew of new technologies such as lane departure warning, blind-spot warning, NASA-inspired seats, and even a new infotainment system to excite consumers.

Amid high gas prices, Nissan believes consumers will appreciate the new Altima’s impressive fuel economy. The model equipped with a 2.5-liter four cylinder engine boasts 38 miles per gallon. By shedding weight compared to the 2012 model, improving the old model’s four-cylinder engine, and adding a new continuously variable transmission, the 2013 Nissan Altima features improved fuel economy as well as performance. If these qualities aren’t enough to lure a few would-be Camry buyers, nothing much will.

Ford Figo Facelift Caught Without Camouflage

Here is another series of shots of the upcoming Ford Figo, this time spotted in Mumbai. The test vehicle was painted in a new bright yellow colour. The variant badge is partially visible and suggests it is a Titanium variant. So blue and yellow seem to be the two new colours this machine is going to get. It is evident from these pictures that nothing has been changed as far as the overall body of the Figo is considered. It seems to be the same sheet metal die of the previous version. Reason enough why Ford hasn’t camouflaged the body of the car.

It is just the front of the Ford Figo that has been heavily camouflaged, which even extends to the fog-lamps. So we can expect some changes in the design of the bumper, headlight profile, and the fog-lamps. At the rear, only the tail-light will get some changes. Another notable change are the new alloy wheels, which look very trendy and young. Looking at the front door handle there is no visible key-hole. Could the new Figo be getting a keyless entry ? Well, these questions will be answered only when the company launches Figo facelift this festive season.

The updated Ford Figo will carry the same mechanicals of the old model. The engines are going to be the same 1.2-litre petrol and 1.4-litre diesel, mated to a 5-speed automatic gearbox. Even the interiors will remain more or less the same with minor changes. The Figo facelift is Ford’s way of keeping the vehicle fresh as competition gets intense in the small car segment. Ford might also hike prices marginally (roughly Rs. 10,000/-).

Maruti Suzuki Shamelessly Copies Ford

<!-- google_ad_client = "pub-4818479106882747"; /* 336x280, created 11/7/10 */ google_ad_slot = "7956591615"; google_ad_width = 336; google_ad_height = 280; //-->

Can you guess which are the above two cars, with the logo of both the cars masked. Chances are you will say that one is the Ford Figo in yellow, while the other is a Ford Figo in red. However the red car is the upcoming Alto 800, whose styling Maruti Suzuki has shamelessly copied from the Figo. The headlight, front bumper (sans fog lamps) and front grill are so similar to the Figo that for the lay man (read not an enthusiast), both cars would be the same. If you look keenly you will see the single washer nozzle on the Alto 800 but even then the front-end similarities are quite shocking.

But why does Maruti Suzuki have to indulge in copying, don’t they have a design team of their own? The Alto 800 is designed and developed by Maruti Suzuki’s Indian engineers, who don’t really spend lots of time in styling a vehicle. The Ertiga is another vehicle which had heavy contribution from Maruti Suzuki India and if you look at the concept shown at the 2010 Auto Expo, you will be thoroughly disappointed with the production model. Maruti Suzuki could have used their family styling on the Alto 800, which is similar to what is seen on the Swift, Ritz, Kizashi and Grand Vitara.

Recently Apple sued Samsung for a hefty $2 billion dollars for copying them. Apple won $1 billion as the judge found Samsung guilty. The world’s most valuable company alleged that their iPad and Samsung’s Galaxy tab look so similar that customers can’t really differentiate between them. Could Ford also do something similar, we seriously doubt as law suits over design and styling are not common in the automobile industry. However its really sad to see India’s largest and one of the oldest car makers to resort to copying design on their latest and most important project.

Yamaha Ray - First Ride Impressions

Scooter market in India has spiced up when Italian manufacturer Piaggio launched Vespa. Following footprints Yamaha has also launched their first scooter, ‘Ray’, which was showcased earlier this year at the Auto Expo. Yamaha desperately wants to penetrate in to Honda’s market and is leaving no stone unturned for the same. Yamaha launched the Ray scooter earlier this month in Hyderabad with its new brand ambassador Deepika Padukone. Autocar India has got their hands on the scooter and we bring you some key points from their test ride.

This light weighted 104 kgs scooter has got a sporty look, with a youthful appearance.
The front resembles the Honda Dio with large headlights and new age mudguards.
The saddle height has been kept low, keeping in mind the needs of its target audience. Ray offers a comfortable driving posture for average to medium built male riders, but the taller one’s may feel cramped up.

Instrument cluster is stylish with a big speedometer and fuel gauge.
The Yamaha Ray offers a good gripping over the accelerator and ergonomic brake levers.
The Yamaha Ray lacks in rear brake locking clamp, which is much needed in the scooters of this segment as an important safety feature.

The Yamaha Ray completely stands apart when it comes to storage space. It has got a large underseat storage bay, with a hook for bag near the ignition switch and too add it has got ample small storage compartments for your utilities.

The pillion’s foot rests are designed ergonomically, to ensure a comfortable ride along with a broad alloy grab bar at the rear.

The rear design is as impressive as the front with clear lens turn indicators included in the tail light.
The four-stroke air-cooled engine produces a top power of 7 BHP at 5000 RPM and a peak torque of 8 Nm at 5000 RPM which are pretty decent for 113cc engine. The engine is vibration free and smooth. It has adequate performance for commuting.

Handling is good with light steering and good stability.
The telescopic type suspension is used in the front and unit swing at the rear for a comfortable ride experience.
The brakes are drum type of equal 130mm diameter in front and rear, offering adequate stopping power.
Quality is very good and all the plastics feel built to last.
The Yamaha Ray is a comfortable scooter with modern styling, high quality and a reliable engine.

Honda Brio Drive To Discover 3 Experience

Honda Brio Drive To Discover 3 – Click above for high resolution picture gallery

The Honda Brio is an extremely capable machine and despite a few setbacks in Thailand, the deliveries are now on in full swing. Honda is showcasing the Brio’s capabilities via the Honda Brio – Drive to Discover. A similar drive was earlier done with the Honda City from Jammu to Trivandrum.

This time we take the Honda Brio along the same route and take over the third leg of the drive from Jaipur. We have been assigned to drive till Ahmedabad via a night halt at Udaipur. There was one car for the journalists and one support car which was driven by Honda officials.

We were flagged off from Jaipur at 8.30 AM and had to cover a distance of 428 kms on the first day, our destination being Sheraton Palace, Udaipur. The simplest route was taking NH8, which forms a part of the golden quadrilateral. After negotiating city traffic, we were soon on the highway. Roads in Rajasthan are simply amazing, smooth tarmac for kilometers together with an occasional rough patch, mostly around the villages we pass on the highway. The weather was great too, slightly overcast with occasional showers. The Brio proved to be an extremely comfortable car. After covering a distance of 428 kms on the first day, there was hardly a hint of fatigue. Getting into Udaipur was a task as we lost GPS signal several times and had to go through narrow village roads with a few off road excursions. Despite all this, we made it to our destination at 5 PM.

We found this hilarious milestone on the way.

We set off for Ahmedabad on the second day. After a lazy breakfast, we were buckled up by 9.45 AM. This section of the route involved some hilly driving and the Honda Brio was up for a challenge and surprised us with its polished high speed manners and cornering ability. The car felt extremely safe and planted at triple digit speeds and we were having our share of fun pushing it through the corners. As we entered Gujarat, we were stopped for security check, the cops clearly had a liking for the Brio and inquired about its price and mileage. Apparently there is some rule in Gujarat which states that all cars in the state must have yellow tape on the headlights. Probing further, one cop told us that its to prevent the light from scattering. We almost lost our faith in the Wave theory of light but complied as per the state laws.

We were shown the chequered flag in just three and a half hours time at Hotel Le Meridian, Ahmedabad and covered 270 kms in good time.

The highlight of our drive was the fact that in spite of driving for 698 kms, there was no hint of fatigue. The Honda Brio is extremely comfortable and also caters to important safety features such as ABS and airbags. The petrol engine from the Jazz is reasonable peppy and offers decent performance with brilliant mileage figures. The Brio returned a mileage of 15.6 km/l on our drive. In the city, the steering is light and nimble and its easy to negotiate through thick traffic while it still feels stable on the highways at high speeds. Though it was predominantly highway running, we were keeping the engine on the boil most of the times. It was a memorable experience and yes, not only did the Brio love us back, we loved it too.

Infiniti Considers Saying Goodbye to V8 Engines

Due to increasingly stringent emissions standards, Infiniti is reportedly going to move away from V8 powerplants. According Motoring.com.au, Nissan’s luxury arm will downsize its engine offerings for new vehicles moving forward.

Many automakers, both high-volume brands and luxury brands, are steadily moving toward smaller engines to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions. If Infiniti follows suit, it will not be the only automaker attempting to get more with less cylinders. Still, Infiniti execs promise that performance won’t be sacrificed on any new vehicle.

“I am afraid (U.S.) CAFE regulations and emission regulations around the world make the development of V8s as part of a new family of engines almost impossible,” said Andy Palmer, executive vice president for Nissan. “F1 has gone V6 for example. You can get the performance out of a V6 or an I4 and you can get the fuel consumption out of it.” Moving forward, Infiniti will likely switch to boosted four- and six-cylinder powertrains that will offer comparable V8 performance with better overall fuel economy.

Like Audi and other brands, Infiniti will likely embrace turbocharging, supercharging, and other technologies to help bring more power from smaller displacement engines. Even Ford has utilized twin-turbocharged engines for its F-150 pickup–once a V8-only vehicle. So for those thinking that larger necessary means better and brawnier, think again.

In the U.S., Infiniti currently uses a 5.0-liter V8 to power its FX50 crossover. The the M56 sedan and QX56 SUV both utilize a 5.6-liter V8. If the move toward smaller engines proves to be accurate, it’s unclear how this will impact Nissan-branded vehicles that share similar platforms.

Next Nissan Leaf Will Go Further for a Lot Less

According to a report in SankeiBiz, a Japanese newspaper, the Nissan Leaf will boast a slightly better range for the 2013 model year. Additionally, Nissan’s going to introduce an entry level model that allows consumers to enjoy all-electric driving for less.

The 2013 Leaf will reportedly have a range that will exceed 155 miles (on the Japanese cycle). On the U.S. cycle, expect the updated Leaf to be able to get 91 miles per charge, which surpasses the 82 miles afforded by the Honda Fit EV.

Nissan likely improved the Leaf’s range through updated the lithium-ion batteries and adding a more efficient transmission, but the specific updates have yet to be confirmed.

Additionally, the price war among EVs is about to heat up because a less expensive Leaf, albeit with a lower range, is also expected to hit showrooms. The Leaf’s styling will also be updated to reflect Nissan’s more recent design language. The report suggests that the changes to the Leaf were moved forward by a year, due to lower-than-expected global sales of the Leaf.

Although Nissan has yet to comment on the report, Nissan executive Mark Perry predicted changes for 2013 Leaf as far back as 2010. Stay tuned for more details on the changes that might come as the Leaf attempts to stay on top of the class it essentially created.

2013 Honda Accord Production Gets Underway

Honda has officially kicked off production of its new 2013 Accord. Production for the new flagship started at the Japanese automaker’s Anna Engine and Honda Transmission Mfg. plants last week, where they’re cranking out new powertrain components that will make the Accord efficient and fun to drive.

Production of Honda’s new “Earth Dreams” powertrains coincided with Honda’s 30-years anniversary of manufacturing in the United States. As such, a ceremony was also held at the automaker’s Marysville, Ohio, assembly lines where the 2013 Accord has started rolling off the lines.

“This new Accord excels in all areas, and it’s being built in a plant that excels in all areas as well – including flexibility, efficiency and quality for the customer,” said Hide Iwata, president and CEO of Honda of America Mfg. “For 30 years, the Accord has been the signature vehicle from Honda, and it remains the industry benchmark in a very competitive segment.”

The 2013 Accord promises to be the most advanced model yet. Aside from all-new powertrain technologies, the new Accord will feature a slew of exciting new technologies including Lane Departure Warning; and Forward Collision Warning. New technologies that are standard on all Accord models include rearview camera and Expanded View Driver’s Mirror. Also standard are popular technologies including Bluetooth hand-free phone interface, Multi-Information Display (i-MID), SMS text messaging function and Pandora Internet Radio.

“The styling is outstanding, the features are impressive and the technology is unlike any other vehicle in this segment,” said Jeff Tomko, plant manager of the Marysville Auto Plant. “But what really makes this vehicle great is the hands-on craftsmanship that each of our associates have put into building this new Accord.”

In addition to offering all the value and reliability the consumers expect, Honda also promises that the 2013 Accord will deliver fun driving dynamics, great fuel economy, and a comfortable cabin with a very quiet ride. The folks producing the new Accord stress that superb production quality will help make the latest generation Accord retain its position as a class leader. Translation–the 2012 Toyota Camry and the 2013 Nissan Altima have officially been warned.

“Together, we worked hand-in-hand to ensure that every detail of this vehicle could be manufactured with the highest levels of quality,” said Mike Fischer, manufacturing new-model leader for the Accord. “We have been very successful at taking an exciting design concept for the 2013 Accord and turning it into a segment-leading product for our customers.”

Stylish 2013 Nissan Sentra Debuts With 40 MPG

The Nissan Sentra hasn’t fared well against other exciting competitors in the compact sedan segment. However, Nissan is hoping to change that with the introduction of the 2013 Sentra–an all-new model with fresh styling, a new and improved transmission, and a competitive 40 miles per gallon.

Clearly based on the Chinese market Sylphy which made its debut at the Beijing Motor Show earlier this year, the 2013 Nissan Sentra borrows styling from the larger Altima sedan. While lacking the aggressiveness of other offerings, such as the Ford Focus or Dodge Dart, it does boast handsome lines that should appeal to a wide audience. LED running lamps, sporty 17-inch wheels, and LED tailamps, add stylish accents to the car and give it a premium look.

“The 2013 Nissan Sentra is the most revolutionary design in the nameplate’s 30-year history, a worthy addition to what is without question the most innovative, highest quality, highest value sedan lineup in Nissan history,” said Al Castignetti, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division, Nissan North America, Inc. “With the complete redesign for 2013, Sentra is closer in look and feel to Altima than a typical compact sedan. Like Altima, the new Sentra offers best-in-segment attributes, such as high fuel economy and easy-to-use connectivity, that offer real customer value and convenience.”

Under the hood of the all-new seventh-generation Sentra is a 1.8-horsepower four cylinder engine producing 130 horsepower and 128 pound-feet of torque. It’s mated to a  Nissan’s next-generation Xtronic continuously variable transmission. Together, this powertrain helps deliver impressive fuel economy, with most Sentra models rated at 30/39/34 miles per gallon (city/highway/combined). Nissan’s ability to shave about 150 pounds over the outgoing model helped to improve mileage as well. Buyers can opt for the extra-efficient FE+ trim package which will provide a full 40 mpg on the highway.

The Sentra’s interior is what Nissan calls a “class-above” premium feel, with better materials, more features, and more space than the model it’s replacing. It even includes Nissan’s new NissanConnect infotainment system, which combines a bevy of features like NavTraffic, NavWeather, as well as Bluetooth and Pandora streaming audio.

“Sentra has long been known as one of the roomiest sedans in class and the latest iteration is no exception,” said Castignetti. “The fine-tuning of its dimensions has created not only extremely well-balanced exterior proportions but enhanced rear seat legroom and created a larger, more usable trunk space.”

Full pricing information has yet to be released. Stay tuned for more details. Find more information posted below.

2014 Mazda6 Comes Into Focus Ahead of Debut

Mazda’s much-anticipated Mazda6 sedan will officially be making its debut in Moscow this week. Despite the rather odd venue for the debut of Mazda’s flagship, we’re nevertheless excited to see the new sedan. Mazda promises will deliver sporty driving dynamics (aka ‘Zoom Zoom’) along with efficiency, all courtesy of SkyActiv technology.

On the outside, the 2014 Mazda6 features the automaker’s Kodo (“Soul of Motion”) design language. Clearly, designers used the 2011 Takeri Concept as their main inspiration. According to chief designer Akira Tamatani, the Mazda6 boasts “wild and dynamic expressions of motion” while displaying a powerful presence.

Although it’s not confirmed which powertrain options will be available in the U.S. market just yet, Russian buyers will get a 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G (gas) engine producing 148 horsepower. Power will be routed to the front wheels via a a six-speed Skyactiv-Drive automatic, or a six-speed Skyactiv-MT manual gearbox. Buyers can also opt for the Skyactiv-G 2.5-liter unit which is good for 189 horsepower. The later will only be mated with the aforementioned automatic transmission. A diesel unit is also likely to become available after launch.

“In developing the 3rd generation Mazda6, we pursued Mazda’s intrinsic value, ‘driving pleasure’,” says Hiroshi Kajiyama, the new Mazda6 program manager. “We wanted to create a car that reacts and behaves exactly as you expect it to. Part of this involved carefully crafting those parts of the car which you often touch to feel as though they are an extension of your own body.”

The new Mazad6 will also feature Mazda’s new “i-Eloop” system; a regenerative breaking. When combined with “i-stop”, stop/start technology and the sedan’s fuel efficient SkyActiv powertrains, you have a vehicle that promises to deliver excellent fuel economy. Unfortunately, official EPA fuel economy estimates have yet to be announced.

Although real-world fuel economy is assured, the new Mazda6 is also designed to be a driver’s car; offering a level of performance and fun that’s become a staple throughout Mazda’s lineup.

“Mazda’s superb engineering and craftsmanship have realized a car that handles so well it seems to respond directly to the driver’s intentions rather than the physical manipulations of steering, braking and accelerating,” adds Kajiyama. “The new Mazda6 offers the “joy of driving” that people have come to expect from Mazda, but the experience starts even before you get behind the wheel and lingers long after the drive is over. I can’t wait to see the look on the faces of people getting out of the car after their first time behind the wheel of the new Mazda6.”

Find more details on the 2014 Mazda6 posted below. Stay tuned for more information as its U.S. launch approaches.
