The Nissan Sentra hasn’t fared well against other exciting competitors in the compact sedan segment. However, Nissan is hoping to change that with the introduction of the 2013 Sentra–an all-new model with fresh styling, a new and improved transmission, and a competitive 40 miles per gallon.
Clearly based on the Chinese market Sylphy which made its debut at the Beijing Motor Show earlier this year, the 2013 Nissan Sentra borrows styling from the larger Altima sedan. While lacking the aggressiveness of other offerings, such as the Ford Focus or Dodge Dart, it does boast handsome lines that should appeal to a wide audience. LED running lamps, sporty 17-inch wheels, and LED tailamps, add stylish accents to the car and give it a premium look.
“The 2013 Nissan Sentra is the most revolutionary design in the nameplate’s 30-year history, a worthy addition to what is without question the most innovative, highest quality, highest value sedan lineup in Nissan history,” said Al Castignetti, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division, Nissan North America, Inc. “With the complete redesign for 2013, Sentra is closer in look and feel to Altima than a typical compact sedan. Like Altima, the new Sentra offers best-in-segment attributes, such as high fuel economy and easy-to-use connectivity, that offer real customer value and convenience.”
Under the hood of the all-new seventh-generation Sentra is a 1.8-horsepower four cylinder engine producing 130 horsepower and 128 pound-feet of torque. It’s mated to a Nissan’s next-generation Xtronic continuously variable transmission. Together, this powertrain helps deliver impressive fuel economy, with most Sentra models rated at 30/39/34 miles per gallon (city/highway/combined). Nissan’s ability to shave about 150 pounds over the outgoing model helped to improve mileage as well. Buyers can opt for the extra-efficient FE+ trim package which will provide a full 40 mpg on the highway.
The Sentra’s interior is what Nissan calls a “class-above” premium feel, with better materials, more features, and more space than the model it’s replacing. It even includes Nissan’s new NissanConnect infotainment system, which combines a bevy of features like NavTraffic, NavWeather, as well as Bluetooth and Pandora streaming audio.
“Sentra has long been known as one of the roomiest sedans in class and the latest iteration is no exception,” said Castignetti. “The fine-tuning of its dimensions has created not only extremely well-balanced exterior proportions but enhanced rear seat legroom and created a larger, more usable trunk space.”
