Hills not only have bumpy and zigzag tracks but also lack proper lighting on roads that makes the driving more scary and risky. Hence, it necessary that we follow a proper driving pattern in order to avoid accidents. Here are some tips that you should follow while going on hills:
1) While approaching the hills ensure that you drive on a limited speed and beware as there can be some sharp turns. Most often drivers neglect the sharp turns ahead that in turn endanger their life. While traveling in nights on hills, the visibility of turns is extremely poor which can cause accidents, therefore be alarmed to drive on the sharp turns tactfully.
2) While moving upwards on a hill, ensure that you drive the car on a high gear transmission as this would enable the car to move upwards easily and churn more torque. If the gear transmission is too low, the tires start spinning asymmetrically. The best gear transmission pattern while driving on hills is driving on 3rd gear while moving up and 1st gear while coming down with an automatic transmission, whereas in the manual transmission it should be 2nd gear while moving upwards and 1st gear while stepping downwards.
3) In order to keep the vehicle well balanced, try to keep the vehicle parallel with the slope. The proper parallel combination of your vehicle and slope will not only distribute the vehicle’s weight on the chassis but also it will avail a proper traction to all the four wheels. Furthermore, when the vehicle is following downwards limit your acceleration to keep the car balanced and low down the speed.
4) If the vehicle does not have automatic adjustable headlamps, keep the high beam lights turned on while moving upwards on the hill and when you move downwards, switch on the low beam lights. During night traveling, high beams cover a longer distance while moving upwards and low beams give better visibility while sloping downwards.
5) When you park the vehicle on a hill, ensure that you turn off then engine and apply a gear or apply the hand brakes. For additional braking assistance, you can place rocks or logs beneath the wheels.
