Nissan chief designer Shiro Nakamura promises that the design of the next-generation Murano will be just as bold as when the first generation was introduced.
“When we did the first Murano [in 2002], we shocked people,” Nakamura told Automotive News. “We’d like to make another shock.”
For a glimpse of what the new Murano might look like, look no further than the Nissan TeRRA Concept, which is making its debut at the Paris Motor Show this week. The TeRRA is fuel-cell-powered concept that embodies Nissan’s commitment to innovative powertrain technologies and zero-emissions. But its styling is also likely to inspire the new Murano.
Unlike the current Murano, the TeRRA concept has some fairly rugged design cues, such as elevated ground clearance and a chopped roofline. It even boasts a torque-vectoring all-wheel drive system for added traction off-road and in cornering.
We won’t see a completely redesigned Nissan Murano until 2014. But when it does arrive, it should offer a look that that will turn plenty of heads–and maybe even spawn imitators just like the original. It will also be built for the first time on U.S. soil, helping Nissan increase profitability over the current model that’s imported from Japan.
Additionally, Nakamura also promised that the next Maxima sedan will become sportier and more aggressive. In addition to being lighter and more fuel-efficient than the current model, it will return to its roots and become a true “four-door coupe.”
