Due to skyrocketing petrol prices, diesel has become the pressing need for the day. But driving a diesel car is not that simple as you may think. Though currently less noisy and more advanced diesel engines are being developed but driving them is still a very dissimilar experience as compared to a petrol car due to power delivery difference between both types of engines. Well you don’t bother as we are here with few tips in order to get the best from your diesel car.
The first thing you need to do is to control your destructive habit of driving, as diesel cars have a lot of torque even on very low rpm and your go-fast approach will cost about 2-litres more per 100 kilometres. Secondly you should take care that your car is running efficiently on an optimal speed point otherwise accelerating your car 20% above the speed limit will impact its fuel consumption depressingly. Each engine has a point where it runs more economically, on average somewhere around 60-kmph highway speed in 5th gear but it differs from car to car.
Next point you should keep in mind is to use car’s cruise control on regular basis so that you are not inclined to accelerate too much. Actually humans are likely to overcorrect by accelerating a little too much or decelerating which results in wasting of fuel, so you better give this task to on-board computer which can capably maintain cruising speed. In addition to this, make sure that you are not using your engine brakes to stop as it will waste a lot of fuel. Instead try to stop the car in neutral mode or by holding the clutch down.
As soon as you can, take the car on higher gears as over rotating the engine on same gear spends more fuel and diminishes the efficiency of engine as well. Try to shift your car in lower gear when you see that engine is about to stop. Usually most of us push the accelerator stronger when there is no chance to pull the engine anymore, but try to avoid this habit as this will soak more fuel.
One more important thing you need to take care is to use car’s electrical convenience only when necessary because most of them consume fuel badly. During the day, turn off full lights and let day running lights do the rest. Always try to maintain the usage of high fuel-consuming features like defrost, seat warmer etc. Besides this, use air-conditioner only when there is terrible need as it is the worst fuel consuming instrument.
In addition to these tips, try to avoid driving on interrupted routes with lots of stop lights and crowds. Keep in mind that shortest route is always not the fastest one, so travel on the way which is simple or uninterrupted.
Lastly, always note down “Trip” odometer reading whenever you empty your fuel tank as it will help you in doing better job with your fuel by trying different driving patterns, speeds, and routes etc.
