So you love the Mini brand, but the all-new Paceman or Mini Coupe isn’t quite the performance vehicle you’re looking for? Well don’t fret; Mini may be working on a pure driver’s car that will appeal to enthusiasts.
According to a new report from Inside Line, Mini is considering a small sports car and sedan to add to their burgeoning lineup. Although Mini just added the sporty Paceman to its lineup, it’s part Cooper and part two-door crossover, so it isn’t quite the bonafide sports car that many enthusiasts would crave.
Ultimately, Mini wants to recreate their own version of the first-generation Mazda MX-5 Miata — something small, affordable, and fun. With sales steadily growing in the U.S. and in developing markets like China, now is certainly time to extend the Mini brand.
“A lot of customers would like to stay with the brand when they need something bigger. And a Volvo or a BMW will not do,” Mini brand board member Harald Kreuger told Inside Line. He added that all Minis will have “go-kart handling, emotional design, exude Britishness and be profitable.”
The success of the Mini brand is almost a guarantee that more exciting models are on the horizon. Whether or not we’ll see the arrival of a more compact Mini that also excites enthusiasts remains a mystery, but stay on the look-out for firmer details next year.
