Ford builds 500,000th EcoBoost engine - Latest Cars News

Although now offered in a number of Ford vehicles, lucky EcoBoost engine number 500,000 was installed in a Ford Escape SUV at Ford's Louisville Assembly Plant.

The EcoBoost nameplate first hit the market in 2009 with the launch of the Taurus SHO sedan, which featured a 3.5L twin-turbocharged V6. Ford sold just 9,946 EcoBoost-equipped vehicles that year, but volume increased to 15,117 in 2010. Last year Ford spread the EcoBoost engine option to a number of new vehicles, resulting in a total of 127,683 EcoBoost sales in the U.S. Alone.

That figure should continue to rise in the coming years. Ford recently launched its all-new Fusion sedan with two EcoBoost engine options and the Dearborn-based automaker confirmed this week that a 1.0L EcoBoost engine will be available in its redesigned 2014 Fiesta.

Although now buried in the annals of automotive history, Ford originally branded its turbocharging technology as TwinForce. However, the automaker ultimately switched to EcoBoost to better reflect the technology's fuel economy benefits.
