Toyota recalling 670,000 U.S. Prius models over steering, water pump issues - Latest Cars News

According to Toyota, the splines that connect the steering shaft to the steering gear box can be deformed over time by "forceful" use of the steering wheel. Dealers will inspect the intermediate extension shaft and, if necessary, replace it; all of the 670,000 Prii will need to be checked for the issue.

Roughly 350,000 of the recalled hybrids are also impacted by the other problem, which relates to an electrically driven water pump that circulates coolant through the hybrid components. The electric motor that powers the pump is at risk to fail, which can cause the hybrid system to shut down. To fix the issue, dealers will replace the electric water pump.

Toyota says that no crashes or injuries relating to either problem have been reported.

In all, the steering recall affects 2.76 million vehicles worldwide, while the water pump recall will impact 630,000 vehicles. About 620,000 second-generation Prius models are being called back for both problems, according to an Automotive News report.
