Name it either miracle of festive season or state it the effects of hiked diesel prices, but whatever it is, petrol cars are surely benefited in the month of October. Though diesel cars demand is still very strong with 57% of total car sales up to September end, petrol cars have also seen 3-5 % surge in sales, taking its overall score to 46-48%.
According to some industry experts, sluggish petrol cars demand actually needed a shot and festive season made this task easier, however hike in diesel price by Rs.5 in mid September also played big role in driving buyers towards petrol vehicles. In the month of October, petrol cars have made a strong comeback. Customers are looking for popular entry-level petrol cars like Hyundai’s EON and Maruti’s Alto 800 along with hatchbacks like Maruti’s Swift, Nissan’s Micra, Skoda’s Fabia and the Toyota Etios Liva.
Commenting on the issue, P Sandeep Singh, deputy MD (marketing) at Toyota Kirloskar Motors said that attractive price tag and to be proved more complimentary economies of running petrol vehicle have resulted in upswing in demand for these vehicles. Entry level small petrol cars like Maruti Alto 800 and Hyundai Eon, which carry a sub Rs.3 lakh price tag gave a shot in petrol cars sales for companies. The rise in Eon sales has helped Hyundai to post 18 % growth in petrol models in October opposed to 10% in diesel variants. Besides this, marketing projects in rural markets where demand mainly is for petrol variants also assisted auto groups to enlarge the overall share of petrol car sales to 82% in October from 80% in September.
