MG to launch diesel-powered MG6 next month - Latest Cars News

The mill is a 1.8-liter four-cylinder turbocharged unit that was developed in the U.K. specifically for the European market. It delivers a maximum output of 150 horsepower and 258 lb-ft. of torque while returning roughly 44 miles per gallon in a mixed British cycle, which is significantly different from the way that the EPA rates cars.

Shifting duties are handled by a six-speed manual gearbox that sends power to the front set of wheels. Equipped with the diesel, the 6 is capable of sprinting from zero to 60 mph in in 8.9 seconds before reaching a top speed of 124 mph.

When it launches, the oil-burning mill will be offered in both the five-door 6 GT and the four-door 6 Magnette. The cars will be identical to their gasoline-burning counterparts, though they might wear a discreet "TurboD" emblem on the trunk lid.

MG has been back in the U.K. for over a year now but it has only managed to sell a handful of cars a month. The company's top brass hopes that the addition of a diesel engine will give MG sales a much-needed boost and enable it to reconquer markets across the Old Continent.

The diesel mill will not be offered in the brand's home country of China, where consumers tend to prefer gasoline engines.

Pricing information and a more complete set of technical details will be released closer to the car's on-sale date.
