Minicars like the Smart Fortwo are big on fuel economy, but are rarely thought to offer much utility, if any. However, Smart may want to change that perception. At the recent Detroit Auto Show, the minicar brand unveiled the Smart For-Us, a concept that combines the pint-sized proportions of the ForTwo with the utility of a pickup.
The For-Us concept is propelled by an electric motor that cranks out 75 horsepower and 98 pound-feet of torque. Electricity is supplied by a 17.6 kW/h lithium ion battery pack, which, for comparison, is more juice than a Chevrolet Volt.
“We at smart love pickups – if they are small on the outside, large on the inside, very safe and extremely comfortable,” said Smart CEO Dr. Annette Winkler. “With the Smart For-Us, a petrol station is no longer needed.”
Smart says this electric pickup can do a 0-60 mph sprint in just five seconds and reach a top speed of 80 mph — solid numbers for an EV. The automaker also says it can go from 20 percent charged to 80 percent in just 3.5 hours, while a full charge will require eight hours.
Of course the For-Us wouldn’t be seen on construction sites alongside Silverados and F-150s, but its small bed still provides 11.6 cubic feet of space, which could come in handy for urban buyers. However, at this point the truck is strictly a concept and there hasn’t been word on whether it will reach showrooms.
