GM Ends Hybrid Truck and SUV Development

Although fuel economy has become an important factor in new GM vehicles, the automaker has decided to pull the plug on development for its next-generation two-mode hybrid technology used by its full-size trucks and SUVs.

 
While the technology has been widely touted, hybrid variants of the Chevrolet Silverado, Tahoe, GMC Sierra, Yukon and Cadillac Escalade, have not sold well. Additionally, the new technology was likely to yield only minor improvements and fuel economy gains over technology currently in place. In most of the aforementioned models, the two-mode hybrid system is rated at 20 miles per gallon in the city and 23 mpg highway.

 
The report, which comes from GMInsideNews.com, is unusual in the GM doesn’t typically kill programs that are so close to launch. For now, GM hasn’t commented on the report.

 
Next-generation trucks and SUVs are scheduled to debut for the 2014 model year. Hybrid variants were due to get an updated two-mode system, featuring a smaller displacement V8 engine, upgraded battery storage, and revamped electric motors. It was also speculated that the new technology would be plug-in capability.

 
Although official word from the PR folks at GM have yet to make an official statement regarding these technologies, don’t be surprised if these updated hybrid offering won’t make it into showrooms.
