It seems that the Paris Motor Show is all about young, active urbanites. The front-wheel-drive Active Tourer concept may not be quite as rugged as the Nissan TeRRA concept, but it offers plenty of utility. It also seems far more production-ready than the TeRRA and could be a preview to a new Mercedes-Benz A-Class competitor.
Under the hood of the BMW Active Tourer is a turbocharged, 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine assisted by a plug-in hybrid motor and lithium-ion battery. Total drivetrain output is 190 horsepower, allowing the Active Tourer to hit 60 mph in the 7-second range. BMW says it will also be able to yield 94 miles per gallon – on the European cycle.
Despite being an Eco-friendly compact, it’s still a BMW through and through with sporty accents. Up front it sports BMW’s corporate face, with a twin-kidney grille and eyebrow-laced lights. It even rides on bold 20-inch alloy wheels.
Inside, there are wood in-lays and a center console that floats off the floor. A panoramic glass roof lends a bit of airiness to the cabin. The rear seats fold in a 40/20/40 split, and rear passengers are able to attach iPads and other small accessories to vertical metal tracks behind the front seats.
The BMW Active Tourer Concept will make its official debut in Paris next week. Stay tuned for additional details.
