Ahead of its official debut at the Paris Motor Show, Nissan decided to show off its latest concept, the TeRRA fuel-cell SUV. Slightly reminiscent of the bulbous Juke, it includes a hydrogen fuel cell that powers three electric motors for zero-emission off-roading.
The Nissan TeRRA is a concept designed for young urbanites, rather than off-roading purists. But despite its eco-friendly tech, the TeRRA does feature the added traction of all-wheel drive and good ground clearance. Shiro Nakamura, a Nissan senior vice president, also noted that it embodies an image of “modern toughness.” Could the concept be the perfect blend of Juke and Xterra?
“Our challenge was to take Nissan’s strength in SUVs and crossovers forward into the zero-emissions era, fuel cells being our new frontier in zero emission mobility” said Francois Bancon in a press release, Nissan’s general manager of product strategy and planning. “Not big and tough for the desert, the aim was a new approach to SUVs that’s relevant to urban life. The unique diagonal seating layout that offers an exciting driving experience thanks to exceptional visibility that creates a sense of being in control under any conditions.”
In a statement, Nissan said that the concept was inspired “by the lifestyle of youthful customers in Northern Europe.” Its electric powertrain eliminates driveshafts, allows the cockpit deck inside to be completely flat. The airy interior is dominated by wood and acrylic accents.
Although the automaker is already a leader in the electric vehicle market, the TeRRA concept is Nissan’s way of showing that it’s ready fuel-cell vehicles — albeit “whenever hydrogen becomes widely available.” However, Nissan is also making a statement in terms of style. While the TeRRA exudes traditional SUV heritage, the design is fresh, athletic, and also expresses Nissan’s very unique vision of the zero emissions future.
