Next 911 GT3 to make debut in March, get 450 horsepower? - Auto News

Next 911 GT3 to make debut in March, get 450 horsepower?
Instead, Porsche will bolt its seven-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic exclusively to the engine, which is also said to be a 3.8-liter, naturally-aspirated flat-six, AutoCar believes. The 997-generation GT3 RS 4.0 used a 4.0-liter engine, and many believed this one will carry over to the 991. The transmission is also heavier than a manual, which flies in the face of the GT3's idea of a lightweight road car made for the track. Still, it should prove to offer greater and more consistent performance.

Despite this, sources said Porsche reduced the overall curb weight of the car by about 88lbs over the predecessor, which should but the new car at an estimated 2,987lbs. This is possible thanks to removing the rear seat, using less posh interior trim, paring down equipment levels compared to regular 911s and using lightweight materials for the bodywork.

That's really light for a car that's said to make 450 horsepower, or about 15 more than the current GT3 (pictured above). Performance numbers for the new car should include a sub-4-second 0-62mph run and a top speed that knocks on the door of 200mph.

The car will distinguish itself from other 911s thanks to unique, likely wider body work and more aggressive aero pieces. This includes a more sculpted front bumper, wider air ducts for better cooling of the engine, and an extra air intake between the top of the front bumper and the hood/trunk lid.

The flared fenders will envelop 20-inch alloys which get single, center lock nuts. Out back, a large fixed wing will aid grip, which has always been a GT3 trademark. The engine will exhale through twin, centrally-located exhaust tips.

An even more focused GT3 RS is due to arrive based on the 991 platform sometime in 2015. It is believed to make about 480 horsepower.
