The smallest, most fuel-efficient Range Rover ever produced is continuing to earn praise from the media. The latest accolade is from Esquire, which has just named the 2012 range Rover Evoque its SUV of the Year.
Esquire’s coveted SUV of the Year title was given to the Evoque because it gives consumers what they want – a stylish crossover that makes on-road driving dynamics a top priority and off-road capability secondary. Although the Evoque is a Range Rover through and through and can be taken off the beaten path, most owners will enjoy its sporty on-road handling and luxurious interior.
As a refresher, the Evoque is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline four that produces 240-horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque. This unit is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission which sends power to all four wheels. This unique powertrain can deliver a 0-60 mph time of about 7 seconds while yielding strong fuel economy for a luxury crossover – an EPA rated 18/23/28 mpg (city/combined/highway).
The success of Land Rover’s smallest Range Rover product may lead to other pint-sized ‘utes in the future. According to Land Rover design chief Gerry McGovern, the brand is considering building another Range Rover slated below the Evoque in terms of size and price. With accolades continuing to roll-in and more than 90,000 Evoques sold already since its 2011 launch, it’s no wonder why Land Rover is looking to downsize.
