Citroen reveals all-electric light commercial van - Latest Automobile News

The Berlingo Electrique is powered by an electric motor that was developed jointly by PSA Peugeot-Citroën and Mitsubishi. Mounted in the van's engine bay, it sends 67 horsepower and 147 lb-ft. of torque to the front wheels via a single-gear reduction gearbox.



The van reaches 62 mph from a stop in a lackadaisical 19 seconds and goes on to a top speed of 68 mph. It offers a driving range of up to 105 miles when driven conservatively.

The electric motor draws electricity from a two lithium-ion battery packs that are mounted near the rear axle. A full charge takes six to nine hours on a standard household outlet but an 80 percent charge can be obtained in a half hour when using a quick charger.

Save for a couple of model-specific emblems and stickers, the Berlingo Electrique is nearly identical to its four-cylinder-powered counterpart. The two vehicles share the same dimensions inside and out and boast the same 1,500-pound payload.

The Berlingo Electrique will go on sale across Europe as a regular-production model in the second half of 2013. Pricing information will be released closer to its launch.

While Citroën has yet to confirm this, a family-oriented five-seater version of the Berlingo Electrique is likely to join the lineup next year.
