Shortly after being named Cadillac's new leading man on Tuesday, Ferguson confirmed that Cadillac is strongly considering a new flagship model to compete with vehicles like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and BMW 7-Series. However, Ferguson stopped short of saying such a vehicle has officially received the green light.

"We're looking at a flagship model," Ferguson told The Detroit News. "It would be the car everyone looks at and says, 'Wow, Cadillac is smoking.'"

Interestingly, Ferguson also revealed that Cadillac is considering a new two-seat sports car. Cadillac's last sporty car, the Corvette-based XLR, was a market flop.

However, the luxury market has changed since the XLR, with more and more automakers putting a greater focus on two-seat sports cars. Jaguar recently unveiled its all-new F-Type at the Paris Motor Show and BMW is planning to debut an updated version of its Z4 in the coming months.

But those new models will be just part of Cadillac's branding revolution moving forward. In a bid to better differentiate the brand, Cadillac will have its own stand at the 2013 Detroit motor show separate from the GM display. Ferguson has also promised that the next-generation Cadillac Escalade, which shares a platform with the Chevrolet Tahoe, will arrive with a unique interior.

"We're going to work really hard to make Cadillac distinctive," Ferguson said. "We want the consumer to know from incubation to delivery, from initial design through customer care, this is about American luxury."
