Audi isn’t the only automaker eager to discuss driverless cars at the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show this week. Toyota introduced its automated driving technology, hinting at what it believes will make driving dramatically safer in the coming years.
A Lexus LS 600h L is serving as Toyota’s Advanced Active Safety Research Vehicle (AASRV). The AASRV has been outfitted with a range of sensors and lasers to help take stresses away from the driver. However, unlike Audi’s driverless car, Toyota’s technology isn’t intended to make a fully autonomous car, but rather make the driver more of a co-pilot.
“In our pursuit of developing more advanced automated technologies, we believe the driver must be fully engaged,” said Mark Templin, Toyota Group vice president and general manager of Lexus. “Our vision is a car equipped with an intelligent, always-attentive co-pilot whose skills contribute to safer driving.”
The Lexus LS AASRV uses 360-degree LIDAR laser on the roof, stereo cameras, radar, and GPS to detect objects all around it. The LS not only can see objects that the driver may not see, but can also distinguish the difference between a red light and a green light.
In Japan, Toyota is also testing its own vehicle-to-vehicle communication system, dubbed Intelligent Transportation System. Together, Toyota’s vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-roadside infrastructure communications systems can alert drivers of potential collisions, eliminate blind spots, and more. But unlike other systems from Google, Audi, and others, the driver’s input will still be required.
“The key point is that automated technologies make driving easier and simpler, enhance the driver’s perception of his environment, his decision-making process and his overall safety skills,” added Templin. “We believe a more skillful driver…is a safer driver. And that this reliable, added-edge of safety can make the driver more confident… and the driving process more enjoyable.”
