Hyundai’s latest concept car isn’t touting performance or design, but rather its advanced connectivity features. The Hyundai Connectivity Concept demonstrates the future link between the car and the smartphone. In lieu of a traditional key fob, Hyundai believes that the smartphone will control vehicles in the future.
Using Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, the car can be locked or unlocked, and personalized settings can be applied to the vehicle’s infotainment system. Eventually, the technology will be able to store other data, such as a driver’s favored seating positions and exterior mirror settings.
“All user content such as music, phone contacts, radio station preferences and individual profile settings are displayed,” said Hyundai in a statement. “In addition, the device’s battery is recharged wirelessly while in use.”
The technology was demonstrated on a Hyundai i30, but the automaker hasn’t specified which production vehicle would be the first to receive the technology. However, Hyundai did promise it would make it into production in 2015.
“Hyundai’s Connectivity Concept showcases the brand’s philosophy of making tomorrow’s technology accessible to a wide range of customers,” Allan Rushforth, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Hyundai Motor Europe. “With this technology, Hyundai is able to harness the all-in-one functionality of existing smartphone technology and integrating it into everyday driving in a seamless fashion.”
