Land Rover planning high-performance Range Rover Sport model? - Latest Cars Wallpapers

The Supercharged version of the Range Rover Sport is already one of the sportiest SUVs in the world, but Land Rover is looking to build on that performance with a new model that would rival the Porsche Cayenne GTS.

"It's one of the areas which the business can expand," David Waide, Land Rover's Chief of Chassis Systems, told Australia's Car Advice. "You've seen this with Jaguar and its XKR-S edition. They've done very well with the R-S model � so there's the ability to do those sorts of things with Land Rover product."

However, Waide cautioned that while the the Range Rover Sport R-S would go after the typical PorscheCayenne GTS buyer, the SUV wouldn't necessarily be as hardcore as its German rival.

"If you compare [the XKR-S] with the Porsche equivalents it's not as sporty; it's as quick, it sounds fantastic, but it's also more comfortable. It's got a balance between GT product and ultimate sports car."

A new R-S model promises to be a perfect fit for the new Range Rover Sport. Like its Range Rover sibling, the new Sport will be moving to an all-new aluminum platform which could trim as much as 700 pounds from its curb weight. Throw in the possibility of the 550 horsepower version of the 5.0L supercharged V8 used in the Jaguar XKR-S and the Range Rover Sport R-S could be capable of a 0-60 time well into the four-second range.
