Yesterday at its Gurgaon facility, Maruti declared to offer its workers a much-awaited wage settlement agreement. It will now give its employees an average salary hike of Rs. 18,000 per month distributed over three years.
The Chairman of the company, RC Bhargava addressed reporters and said, “We are increasing the salaries of our workers and the same will have no significant impact on our bottomline because the wage cost will stand around 2.6% as previously, so there are no chances of any effect.”
He further added that the company’s total cost of wages to workers, like from managing director to executive level and worker stands a little over 2% to total sales. Moreover there is no union at Manesar as of now because the plant confronted a severe clash in July along with one month labor unrest due to the death of senior HR official during the encounter.
Mr. Bhargava mentioned, “We’ve executed a strategy through which existing workers can involve and discuss their thoughts about settling wages. But at the same time we want that wages need to be equal in both factories and must not differ. Also I want to make it clear that average wage hike over a last three years is about 48-49% instead of 75% as proclaimed in few media sections.”

The Vice President of General Motors India, P Balendran stated, “The detail of boosting the car price is still being evaluated and we need to decide on this due to high input costs, currency fluctuation and freight costs. All our models will come in to the standard as the hike will come in effect from 1st October.”
From small car Spark to high-end sports utility vehicle Captiva, the complete auto range of General Motors will come under the price increase criterion ready to be implemented in the Indian market from next month onwards. The Spark starts from price Rs. 2.85 lakh and the range stretches from the same to Rs. 24.6 lakh for Captiva.
Maruti Suzuki and Honda have already announced the price increase and now General Motors India is following the footsteps with many more to join the queue in the coming time. SsanYong Motors has showcased its hybrid vehicle e-XIV based on earlier XIV and KEV concepts today at the 2012 Paris Motor Show. The Korean manufacturer classifies its XIV as Crossover Utility Vehicle (CUV). With XIV cars, SsanYong focuses on developing cars under badging of eXciting, user Interface Vehicles (XIV) and new e-XIV will be powered with electric powertrain. The user interface vehicles provide functionality of operation through smart phones and mobile devices, to vow the young customers. It will be powered with a range extender hybrid powertrain that will use an electric motor to drive the car and a small 1-litre petrol engine which may be used for longer journeys and also for charging the batteries when they drain out.
The car has glass roof with solar panels mounts which converts solar energy to electric energy and supplies power for air-conditioning, audio and lighting devices. The interiors of the car are appealing and showcases touch screen displays and have incorporated the use of futuristic materials such as carbon fibre. It has got four-bucket-seats arrangement for providing comfort and privacy to occupants with multiple positioning options for space utilization. The exterior design is also very futuristic following its ‘Robust Aesthetic’ approach which gives it a contemporary look.
The SsanYong e-XIV uses 16 kWh lithium-ion battery which drives a 80 kW Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) that gives a driving range of 80 kms, after which the petrol engine provides extra power through a generator to extend the driving range to 600 kms. It takes four hours to charge the fully discharged battery and 20 minutes for quick recharging. The e-XIV Concept has a very low emission value of 45 g/kms which is appreciable. SsanYong has not commented anything about rolling out the production models based on these concept hybrid vehicles, but we anticipate that some technology advancements will make its way into the company’s future models.

Volvo has unveiled the V40 Cross Country at the 2012 Paris Motor Show. The V40 Cross Country is a crossover version of the existing V40 hatchback, the design emphasizes on a sporty look and ensures ruggedness for off-roading. The Swedish automaker is aims to capture the market of European competitors such as the BMW X1, Audi Q3 and newly launched Mercedes-Benz B-Class. The company plans to bring the Volvo V40 Cross Country to India by March 2013, pricing it below Rs. 30 lakhs.
For adding off-road capabilities to the existing V40 hatchback, the V40 Cross Country’s ground clearance has been increased to 173 mm which is 40 mm more than the hatchback. As far as the looks of Volvo V40 Cross Country is concerned, it has got a refreshed look with some cosmetic changes in the form of new dark bumpers at both ends with integrated skid plates, daytime running headlamps, bespoke alloy wheels, roof rails, black door mirrors and a new grille design. Interiors have also been improved from the previous version with premium leather seats, multiple storage options in the floor, under armrest storage for CD’s and connector for USB/iPod or AUX depending on the specified type of audio system.
The Cross Country model of the Volvo V40 will be available in all configurations of T4 and T5 engines as available in the V40 hatchback. The top end model will be powered by a 2.5-litre, 5-cylinder petrol turbocharged engine which produces a power output of 250 BHP and a peak torque of 400 Nm. This model will be available in all-wheel drive form with hill descent control to make it off-road compatible. The 2.5-litre T5 engine will be mated to a 6-speed automatic gearbox and accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 6.1 seconds returning a mileage of 13 km/l.
Volvo will primarily target European and Asian markets and have confirmed that the car would not be launched in US markets. The V40 Cross Country will be available for sale at European dealerships by this year end. In India, Volvo will bring completely build units (CBU) of the compact crossover, offering it with a 2.0-litre D3 diesel engine which produces 150 BHP of power and 350 Nm of torque. A more powerful D4 diesel engine could be offered as well, which produces 177 BHP and 400 Nm. This engine enables the Cross Country to do 0 – 100 km/h in 8.3 seconds. Both the D3 and D4 engines are mated to a 6-speed automatic gearbox.

The diesel powered Skoda Rapid will feature a 1.6-litre TDI CR 104 BHP engine and later in 2013, the same engine with an output of 89 BHP. Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive which is fastest electrically-powered vehicle in the world. This emission free super sports car flaunts technology from the world of Formula One made by the people who supply KERS to the McLaren F1 team. The vehicles takes 20 hours to charge. Before this, it was the B-Class concept which got the 'Electric Drive' designation. The model has been developed by Mercedes-Benz tuning division, AMG.
The high performance SLS AMG Electric Drive houses four electric motors which are positioned close to the wheels. These motors produce a combined power output of 740 BHP and a peak torque output of 1000 Nm. This beast accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in a breath taking 3.9 seconds and can reach an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h. The credit for the enhanced driving dynamics of this car goes to the AMG torque dynamics and wheel-selective all-wheel drive. This helps in torque distribution to individual wheels.
You might be wondering with all that power and performance, the SLS AMG Electric Drive would be very silent, thereby not giving the driver the feel of a sports car. But Mercedes-Benz has taken care of the sound aspect and the vehicle will make desired noises of acceleration, cruising, etc through the 11-speaker sound system of the super car.
The high voltage battery that gets used in this car comes from the combined efforts of Mercedes-AMG and Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains. The model is expected to be out in the German market by July 2013 and would be produced in limited numbers. The price should not come as a surprise even though it would start at a whopping €416,500 which is roughly Rs. 2.84 crore (translated to over Rs. 5 crores in India due to CBU duties).

TVS Motor has launched the Phoenix 125cc motorcycle in India, which will compete in the economy segment for the South based company. The 2-wheeler manufacturer has priced the TVS Phoenix at Rs. 53,000/- (ex-showroom, Chennai). The Phoenix has a claimed mileage of 67 km/l under standard test conditions. The company has pitted the TVS Phoenix against the Hero Super Splendor, Honda CB Shine and Bajaj Discover 125. The Phoenix is essentially a StaR City underneath with a new engine and added features.
“We have developed an all new engine for this motorcycle. It complements several unique features to ensure premium ride quality. This launch will increase our market share in the segment. We are now present in economy, executive and premium segments of the motorcycle market,’ Venu Srinivasan, Chairman, TVS Motor, said.
Giving company to the Flame in the 125cc segment, the Phoenix features a digital speedometer, dual spring shock absorbers, electric start and a petal disc at the front. The 125cc, 4-stroke engine of the TVS Phoenix produces 11 PS of peak power output and 10 Nm of torque output which will give it adequate performance in the city. This engine is mated to a 4-speed transmission. The Phoenix has black finished engine, exhaust and alloy wheels. It features body graphics as well.
TVS has been losing market share to Honda and rightly so. The company has failed to bring new product to the market and has put its focus on revamping existing products with minor updates. The TVS Phoenix is the company’s attempt to re-gain lost market share as it finds Yamaha and Suzuki trying hard to snatch fourth position from them. The new motorcycle will help the company increase sales in the upcoming festive season, when demand increases marginally. TVS is also said to be working on a 250cc motorcycle, which is expected to be launched by 2014.
