It’s been only more than a month, when Indian automobile sector, which is already suffering from the fire of global meltdown, came out of shocks of Maruti’s Manesar plant’s lock out and now country’s second largest carmaker Hyundai has appeared as another auto group to be tolerating the brunt of labour-unrest. Workers at Hyundai India’s Sriperumbudur facility, who have been handling logistics operations have gone on strike and consequently production has been punched.
Though logistics operations have been outsourced, but permanent workers at factory are acting at slower pace in displaying unity with the temporarily hired logistics workers. The permanent workers at Hyundai are striking on the issue of 41 demands, for which a charter has been given to the management. As per R. Sridhar, General Secretary, HMIEU, union is advising the management to settle the issue, otherwise they will launch an agitation.
According to Rajiv Mitra, corporate communications head of Hyundai Motor, production is still running, only 20 % of the output had been affected. Though the strike has hit output moderately, but it has approached at the time when demand for cars in India is surging with festival time on the way, so if output faces any upshot, few models like Verna and i10 fluidic will see a big loss as both of them have huge demands in India.
