Anticipating the potential of high-volume Indian car market, Ford Motor Co is aiming to introduce entry level vehicles in India in both small car and premium car segments with an aim to capture larger market share here. Company believes that, in the situation of falling growth and rapid market move towards diesel, it is the time, when globally proved models are to be introduced to build up mass volumes in India.
Talking on the issue, Joe Hinrichs, president of Ford’s Asia Pacific and Africa Head, said that Indian hatchback segment is high –volume driven class and if someone wants to be a big player, it needs to have products in this segment and company is following the same strategy. In reply to a question that if company will launch any new car to be priced below Ford Figo, he quoted that auto group is studying for the same and is capable of doing it as well.
Explaining about Ford India plans, Joe Hinrichs allegedly stated that densely-populated countries like India can be offered high fuel-economy model like ‘Ka’, which is currently being driven in South America and Europe market. Moreover, company has calibre to play a big game in upper segment of the compact car market and these models will come from Ford’s global platforms.
Ford has numerous plans for its future development in India. With the completion of Gujarat plant in 2014, company will be launching new products in its line up. Presently, Ford has capacity to develop 2 lakh vehicles and 3.4 lakh engines at its Chennai plant and with the functioning of Gujarat plant; it will be able to produce 2.4 lakh vehicles and 2.7 lakh engines. The new facility will permit Ford to roll out at least six more new models by mid-decade.
