Land Rover Defender Goes ElectricCars News
It’s not often that automakers infused hardcore off-road vehicles with electric powertrains, but Land Rover is no ordinary automaker. For the upcoming Geneva Motor Show, the automaker has decided to show-off its latest technology, including a nine-speed ZF 9HP automatic transmission and a fleet of all-electric Land Rover Defender research vehicles.
In lieu of the Defender’s standard diesel engine, these research vehicles boast an electric motor producing 94 horsepower and 243 pound-feet of torque. All this power is routed through a single-speed transmission and is fueled by a 300-volt lithium-ion battery with a 27kWh capacity. The 410kg battery is located up front in place of the diesel.
This powertrain helps the Defender cover more than 50 emissions-free miles. And, despite its eco-friendly tech, Land Rover stresses that these research vehicles are still Land Rovers through and through, capable of tackling the rough stuff with ease. Thanks to the Defender’s legendary four-wheel drive system with Terrain Response and a differential lock, it can still pull roughly 12-tons up a 13 percent gradient and wading to a depth of 800mm.
Although there are no plans to put electrified Land Rovers into production, the automaker is looking to test the technology in real-world trials later this year.
“This project is acting as a rolling laboratory for Land Rover to assess electric vehicles, even in the most arduous all-terrain conditions,” said said Antony Harper, Jaguar Land Rover Head of Research. “It gives us a chance to evolve and test some of the technologies that may one day be introduced into future Land Rover models.”

Kia Design Chief Gets Promoted to PresidentCars News
Former Volkswagen designer Peter Schreyer has done wonders for Kia. Since coming to the Korean brand in 2006, he’s infused Kia’s lineup with a much-needed dose of style and helped produce sought-after models like the Optima. He also created a cohesive design language that can now be seen throughout the lineup.
For his substantial impact on the brand’s success in recent years, Peter Schreyer has been promoted to president president. He’s become the first non-Korean to attain the position at Kia.
“The promotion shows Kia’s key focus areas shifting from production and cost efficiency, which were traditionally considered more important, to design and research and development,” said Shin Chung Kwan, an analyst at KB Investment & Securities Co. in Seoul. “It also symbolizes Kia’s urge to advance as a global company–showing a foreigner could make it to one of the top positions.”
In addition to designing stylish vehicles, Schreyer has helped Kia move upmarket. For years the brand had been synonymous with cheap, utilitarian, and boring vehicles, but today the lineup exudes quality and performance. Kia, as well as Hyundai, aim to outdo German rivals like Volkswagen ad BMW, and vehicle design will continue to play a critical role in reaching that objective.
In addition to helping revitalize Kia and spark incredible sales growth in the U.S. and Europe, Schreyer’s success has also inspired other high-profile designers to make to move out of Europe. Hyundai lured ex-BMW designer Christopher Chapman to head its U.S. design center earlier this year.

Kia and Hyundai Bring Google Search to DriversCars News
In-car telematics is important in every segment. While automakers like Audi, Mercedes-Benz, and Tesla are quickly bringing the familiarity of Google Maps to their vehicles, Kia and Hyundai may be getting the leg-up. The Korean brands have announced a new partnership with Google that will bring the search giant’s Google Send-to-Car, local search and voice search, to each of their telematics systems.
The first vehicle to receive the second generation UVO eServices telematics system with Google functionality will be the new 2014 Kia Sorento, which is expected to go on sale during Q1 of 2013. With features like Send-to-Car, drivers will be able to send a point of interest or destination to their car directly from Google Maps via their smartphone UVO app.
“The newest iteration of the UVO platform is a breakthrough as one of the industry’s first mobile pure app-based telematics systems, and now with the Google solutions and APIs, we take the platform to yet another level of enhancement for the Kia customer,” said Henry Bzeih, head of the connected car program and chief technology strategist, KMA. “Due to the popularity and ease-of-use of Google Maps, owners can remain confident in the technology and information being delivered to them.”
Other UVO enhancements include improved music control thanks to the system’s Digital Jukebox. Other UVO eServices features include 911 Connect, enhanced Roadside Assist, Automatic Diagnostics, Manual Diagnostics, Scheduled Diagnostics, vehicle maintenance, and eServices Guide, many of which are run through the owner’s Smartphone equipped with the UVO eServices app available at no charge.
Hyundai is also brining Google Maps application programming interfaces (APIs) to its Blue Link telematics platform. The automaker will show its latest telematics system at the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) next week. With Google’s help, Hyundai believes it can elevate its position as a technology and infotainment leader. Likewise, Google sees the addition as a way to make Hyundai and Kia vehicles more user-friendly.
“We’re always looking for ways to make it easier for people to discover more relevant information to help them make informed choices — whether that’s where to go for a coffee, or where to take dry cleaning,” said Tarun Bhatnagar, head of Enterprise Geo at Google. “It’s great to see that more drivers now have access to fresh, web-based content while on the go with the Hyundai Blue Link Google Maps integration.”

Nissan Resonance Concept Hints at Next Murano, New Hybrid TechCars News
When the first generation Nissan Murano arrived in showrooms in 2004, it was a game-changer in crossover design and inspired imitators. Recently, Nissan’s design chief Shiro Nakamura promised that the design of the next-generation Murano design would be just as stunning as the original. Based on the automaker’s latest concept, Nakamura was telling the truth.
This week, showed off the all-new Resonance Concept, which is believed to be the forbearer to the next Murano, which will arrive in showrooms in 2014. Curvy, edgy, and futuristic looking, the Resonance is said to borrow inspiration from the futuristic allure of hypersonic travel. Maxima-like headlights, Juke taillights, and a grille similar to the new Pathfinder’s, shows that the Resonance would still fit-in to the current lineup while still adding some fresh styling. A full-length glass roof and 22-inch wheels add to the concept’s futuristic and rather sporty look.
“The Resonance concept leads Nissan into a new ‘innovation era’ of smart design and smart technology, ensuring that Nissan will continue its global crossover design leadership for many years to come,” said Nissan Executive Vice President Andy Palmer, hinting at the concept’s inevitable impact on the lineup.
Powering the concept is a hybrid electric drivetrain featuring Nissan’s proprietary “one-motor, two-clutch” system, which combines a smaller displacement internal combustion gasoline engine with an electric motor/lithium-ion battery and advanced management system. Power is sent to all four wheels.
Although Nissan hasn’t said that the Resonance is officially a preview of the next-generation U.S.-built Murano, it’s expected that many of the concept’s design cues will show up on the revamped crossover when it arrives in 2014.

Nissan Leaf Now the Most Affordable 5-Seat EVCars News
Nissan has announced a massive price drop on its all-electric Leaf, making it the most affordable five-passenger electric vehicle on the market in the U.S. Last year’s base model featured a starting price of $35,200. The 2013 Nissan Leaf S will now be available for just $28,800.
Part of the price drop comes from the introduction of a new low-end trim. But it’s also due to the Leaf’s production moving from Japan to Tennessee. Not only will the Leaf be assembled here in the U.S., but its lithium-ion batteries will also be home grown.
While the aforementioned Leaf S can be had for under $30K, the mid-range Leaf SV will be priced from $31,820, while the range-topping SL will now start at $34,840. Despite across-the-board price drops, not much has changed between the 2012 Nissan Leaf and the new 2013 model. The biggest update is a new 6.6-kWh charger that allows for speedier charging.
Note that all 2013 Nissan Leafs still qualify for a $7,500 federal tax credit in addition to state and local incentives.

VW CrossBlue: The Fuel-Sipping SUV Americans Have Been Waiting ForCars News
American drivers certainly love their SUVs. But with gas prices steadily increasing, many consumers are pressed to find the value of all that added utility. However, the latest concept from Volkswagen should provide consumers considering an SUV with the right blend of utility and efficiency they seek.
VW’s CrossBlue is a plug-in concept that combines a front-mounted diesel engine with an electric motor in a traditional hybrid configuration. There’s also an additional, more powerful electric motor out back to drive the rear wheels. This unique configuration allows the on-board battery pack to be recharged through regeneration or by simply plugging into a wall outlet.
According to Volkswagen, the CrossBlue gets 85MPGe—an impressive figure for a six passenger SUV. It’s also said to have a range of 14 miles on pure electricity. What’s even more impressive is that it still boasts 305 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque along with a zero to 60 mph time of 7.2 seconds.
The CrossBlue is technically just a concept, so it’s not clear if a production model would offer the same level of efficiency. Still, the CrossBlue is built around existing technology from the vast VW parts bin, such as the TDI powertrain and DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Styling is pure Volkswagen, with bold horizontal lines at the front and rear that helps makes the CrossBlue look wide and masculine. Inside, there are six individual seats and a layout that promises the spaciousness and flexibility of a minivan.
The CrossBlue Concept hasn’t received the green light for production, but it’s diesel-hybrid powertrain is certainly a sign of things to come. Designers penned the CrossBlue specifically for Canadian and US markets, so don’t be surprised if a vehicle that looks pretty close to it arrives in Volkswagen showrooms in the near future. In the meantime, find more information on the CrossBlue posted below.
