Mercedes-Benz confirms next E63 AMG will arrive with AWD - 2012 Dec. Cars News

Mercedes-Benz confirms next E63 AMG will arrive with AWD
The 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class will make its world debut at the Detroit auto show, with the fire-breathing AMG model to bow shortly thereafter. However, Mercedes has taken a page from Audi's playbook and will equip its BMW M5-fighting sedan with a new all-wheel drive system.

Although technically under the Mercedes umbrella, AMG tends to go their own way as far as engineering is concerned. That will hold true for the E63's AWD system, which is loosely based on Mercedes' 4Matic system.

"We didn't just use Mercedes' all-wheel-drive system. That wouldn't work for AMG," AMG CEO Ola Kaellenius told Motor Trend.

The standard Mercedes 4Matic system splits power 45/55 front/rear, and is capable of any combination between 30/70 and 70/30, depending on wheel slippage. That formula didn't exactly work for AMG, and the performance division made the system a permanent 33/67 split.

In addition to guaranteeing a rear-wheel drive bias, the permanent torque split eliminated the need for complicated : and heavy : locking clutches. As a result, the AWD system will add just 132 pounds to the E63's curb weight.

The new E63 AMG will be powered by the same twin-turbocharged 5.5L V8 used in the current car, but power will be cranked up to about 575 horsepower and 600 lb-ft of torque. Given that prodigious heap of power and the car's new AWD system, Mercedes expects the E63 AMG to complete the sprint from 0 to 60 in just 3.4 seconds, which would make it the fastest sedan on the planet.

The E63 AMG's AWD drive system is expected to spread to the CL S63 AMG and S63 AMG, although the S65 AMG will remain rear-wheel drive only.
