Cummins builds 2 millionth diesel engine for Ram
"The Ram Truck-Cummins diesel partnership is one of the industry's most enduring and certainly fitting of such a tribute," said Fred Diaz, President and CEO : Ram Truck Brand and Chrysler de Mexico. "Both companies have benefited greatly, but Ram diesel customers are the real beneficiaries. Every day they experience the toughness and capability a Cummins-powered Ram can deliver."

Cummins began its relationship with Chrysler back in 1985 when both companies came together to develop a new 5.9L inline-six cylinder turbo diesel for pickup truck applications. That motor hit the market in 1989, developing a then-stout 160 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque.

The milestone-marking engine was Cummins' latest 350 horsepower, 800 lb-ft of torque 6.7L inline-six. Typically used in Ram's heavy-duty truck models, the milestone engine : which sports a unique "Cummins Red" rocker cover and breather : will tour the U.S. before being put on permanent display.

Although Cummins' diesel engines are reserved for heavy-duty versions of the Ram pickup, the engine maker's fingerprints are expected to surface in the half-ton pickup truck segment in the coming months. Ram is said to be developing a half-ton pickup truck powered by a Fiat-sourced diesel engine, but Cummins is believed to be handling the rig's final tuning.
