BMW 3-Series GT caught in the buff [Spied] - Recent Cars News

BMW 3-Series GT caught in the buff [Spied]
Essentially a shrunken version of the larger 5-Series GT, BMW says the 3-Series GT will help it build volume in some key markets, including Asia. In North America, the 5-Series GT has hardly been a sales success, but BMW seems confident that it could profitably sell a smaller model here.

What we know
At least in the European market, BMW will offer two four cylinder offerings with the new 2.0-liter four-cylinder TwinPower turbocharged gas engine, and a four-cylinder turbo diesel. It was unclear if the diesel variant would be coming to U.S. shores, but it was also specified that the GT will come with at least one six-cylinder offering and a hybrid variant as well.

The 3-Series GT will complement the standard 3-Series wagon, which will be making its way to the U.S. market within the next few months. Despite its sloping roof line, the 3-Series GT will actually boast more rear-seat and cargo room than the wagon, thanks to an extended wheelbase.

The 3-Series GT will be positioned as the premium model in the 3-Series lineup - excluding the M3 - and is intended to bridge the gap between the 3-Series and the more up-scale 5-Series. Two versions of the 3-Series GT are planned - a standard version and a sportier M Sport guise, both of which were spotted by our spy photographers.

The standard 3-Series GT will offer seating for five and a more elegant exterior design. The 3-Series GT M Sport, meanwhile, will feature a more aggressive look highlighted by sport bumpers front and rear, flared side trim, larger wheels and blacked out accents instead of chrome. The M Sport model is also expected to offering seating for just four.

The BMW 3-Series GT is set for a Geneva reveal in March, with sales set to commence shortly after.
