Chevy Volt drivers have surpassed 100 million gas-free miles - 2012 Dec. Cars News

Chevy Volt drivers have surpassed 100 million gas-free miles
The milestone took Volt drivers just about two years to achieve. The Volt originally went on sale in December 2010 in select United States market.

During that two-year span, Volt drivers have averaged about 900 miles between gasoline fill-ups, or about a month and a half. The Volt is rated at 98 MPGe and can travel up to 38 miles on battery power. Once the Volt's 16.50-kWh lithium-ion battery dips below a certain point, a small, gas generator kicks on to juice up the battery.

Some drivers are seeing even lengthier periods between fueling stops.

"Since my daily driving is all electric, I only really need to buy gas for long road trips," said Andrew Byrne, a Volt driver from Los Angeles. "I drove over 1,900 miles on my last tank of gas."

According to Chevrolet, Volt drivers save about $1,370 in fuel costs a year compared to owners of gasoline powered vehicles. Chevy notes that those saving could be used to buy nine weeks worth of groceries, 228 car washes or 137 movie tickets.

The Volt has become a popular model in California, largely due to its eligibility for the HOV lane.
