Ron Dennis, McLaren Formula One team principal will step down after leading the team (and Lewis Hamilton, especially) to win the 2008 Drivers’ World Championship.
This news comes as we earlier reported that the team would be aiming higher with its new 2009 MP4-24 and going for both the Constructors’ and Drivers’ Championships. Last season, McLaren lost the Constructors’ Championship to Ferrari and Lewis Hamilton narrowly beat out Ferrari’s Felipe Massa for the Drivers’ Championship.
Dennis says he has stepped down to pursue other interests including his companies upcoming supercar set to be launched in 2010. Dennis will be handing the team over to Martin Whitmarsh on March 1 ahead of the March 29 season start in Melbourne. Dennis will stay on as chief executive of the McLaren Group and will attend some races.
